COMING UP IN 2025
As we enter a cold and grey January, what can we look forward to on the high street in 2025?
First up, big changes are underway on Devonshire Square to make it a permanent space we can all enjoy. We expect the work to be completed in the spring and then we can kick off the markets and other outdoor events in partnership with Arbeit Studios. If you have any other ideas for using the space, then drop Dodie an email with your suggestions. dodie@arbeitstudios.co.uk
Palmers Green is soon to get a Library of Things! Based in the library, this will be a resource for the whole community where you will be able to rent useful household items like a drill, a pressure washer or a sewing machine, so that you don’t have to buy and maintain these costly items yourself. Good for you and the environment.
The Alfred Herring has reopened with new owners and plans for lots of social events in the coming year, kicking off with karaoke on Saturday 18th January.
Say hello, wave goodbye
Sadly we lost both Indian restaurants on Aldermans Hill in 2024 with Bengal Berties our only remaining Indian restaurant in Palmers Green. In 2025 we will be left with just two high street banks with the Halifax due to close this week, leaving only NatWest and Santander.
We also said goodbye to Mini Garms, which closed on the high street but Emma is very much still trading online and at local markets.
Stitch also closed their physical store in 2024 but are focusing on hosting classes and crafty socials across Palmers Green and surrounding areas. They have a range of classes coming up from crochet to how to use a sewing machine. They also host a weekly knitting and crafting social at the Fox pub on Wednesday evenings from 7pm -9pm. Check out their website for more details on their programme of workshops. https://www.stitch.org.uk/
As well as several businesses closing we welcomed new carpet shop Trim and Tuck, Hairdressing duo Dannielle and Chris who have opened a small but beautifully formed salon, Maia & Co. on the corner of Hedge Lane and later this month there will be a new dentist opening in the former Nationwide near the Triangle.
What you can do to support our high street
SHOP LOCAL! Please make the most of the great shops we have locally, not only to support these businesses but to encourage and attract new ones to the area. Don’t immediately opt for Amazon, why not see what the local shops have to offer first. If you can’t see what you need, sometimes they can order in a specific item for you.
Help stop the proposed gambling arcade in the old Lloyds bank Although planning permission was denied, East Kent Leasing Limited have appealed. To help fight the appeal we need you to lodge an objection, but this must be done directly to the planning inspectorate and not Enfield Council by 15th January. Go to the Planning Inspectorate website and search for case number 3356297 or use the direct link below to make your representation. https://acp.planninginspectorate.gov.uk/ViewCase.aspx?caseid=3356297
Support greening the volunteer greening group have worked wonders on the high street planting and maintaining the trees and green spots along the high street but they are always looking for extra pairs of green fingers so email palmersgreenactionteam@gmail.com if you’d like to help out.
