The Streetscape Project
REDEFINING THE STREETSCAPE of the high street
Palmers Green High Street is home to very attractive period buildings, including a Grade II listed building and locally listed buildings that are stellar examples of the Arts and Crafts movement. Sensitive and traditional-style shopfronts increase the appeal of a high street and improve footfall.
Sensitive and traditional-style shopfronts increase the appeal of a high street and improve footfall. Our survey results of the local community showed that respecting the heritage buildings was very important to them.
This project seeks to encourage shop traders and landlords to preserve and emphasise the heritage and period architecture of these buildings with their shopfront fit out, as seen with Holtwhites Bakery.
We also wish to create democratic community spaces on the high street. We have partnered with Enfield Council to create Devonshire Square at the bottom of Devonshire Road. We could see this was an untapped but potentially wonderful way to create community space in the high street, an area for people to rest and meet. The installation began in September 2022 and will feature tables and chairs for the neighbouring cafes, street furniture, planting, interactive artwork, poetry and festoon lighting. We intend for this space to also host local markets and community events.
